Busy Fare Season Continues

( Airfare )

The holidays appear to be the
most popular time for carriers to monkey with fares.
Last night Northwest filed 4,735 new sale fares expanding upon United’s
sale in Northwest’s target markets. The average fare reduction is $121
(one-way). Northwest already matched United’s fare sale yesterday so
these fares are in addition to the original United sale.
The sale fares require […]

Virgin America Denied Right to Fly

( Airline )

Bloomberg is reporting that the US Department of Transportation has withheld approval for Virgin America to start service in the US pending adjustments to Virgin’s current ownership structure. US law limits foreign ownership to a maximum of 25% in airlines operating within the US domestic market.
Richard Branson’s Virgin Group Ltd proivided 25% of the […]

United’s Holiday Treat - a Fare Sale

( Airfare )

United Airlines filed a broad fare sale last night with an average savings of $146 per one-way fare in 7,912 North American markets. This fare sale applies to a significant portion of United’s North American flights and comes on the heels of a system-wide $5 fare increase (one-way) last week.
American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and US […]

Delta Rolls Back $5 Increase

( Airfare )

Delta pulled back its $5
increase (one-way) yesterday in the 12:30 and 8  pm updates.
There have been several pricing “aftershocks” following the original
airfare increase led by American on December 20th. It is typical for
carriers to tweak fares in order to realign all markets following a
system-wide price change. This round has been unusual given the three
pricing […]

Delta Continues Fare Tweaking

( Airfare )

This morning Delta continued to adjust its fares by filing 8,202 fare changes with a $5 increase one-way. The increases were a combination of fare matching as well as increases. The changes were made in secondary markets.
Based on a market-by-market review, this change can be viewed as a continuation of last week’s fare increase.
Right now […]

Postscript: Fare Increase Model Selected

( Airfare )

I mentioned in my previous
notes that there were three models the carriers used in this round of
fare increases.
On Friday night American, Continental and US Airways all adjusted their
fare increase to match the United/Northwest model (a flat $5 increase
one-way).
In the Saturday night update Delta adjusted it’s fare increase to match
the flat $5 model as well.
Looks like […]

Northwest Joins In on Airfare Increase

( Airfare )

Northwest joined the network
carriers by filing a $5 increase (one-way) in the 12:30 pm update today.
Now all of the network carriers have jumped in on this round of
system-wide airfare increases.
There are three models for this fare increase.
American, Continental,
and US Airways (one-way)
 - $5 for 500 miles,
$10 for 1,000 miles,
$15 for 1,500 miles, and $20 for 2,000 […]

Continental, United, and US Air Join Increase

( Airfare )

Continental and United joined
the airfare price increase last night and US Airways joined in this
morning. The only remaining network carrier that has not yet decided to
join is Northwest Airlines.
What’s interesting with this network price increase is that there are
three models. American started the increase on Wednesday night using a
distance-based price increase ($5 for 500 miles, […]

Delta Joins Fare Increase Adding $10

( Airfare )

FareCompare reports that Delta filed 28,341 fare increases in the 12:30 pm update today (Dec 21st). In contrast to the American increase that ranged from $5-$20 depending on the length of flight, Delta raised all its fares by $10 (one-way).
These fare increases are significant and network-wide with no specified end-date.
As with […]

Delta Management is Determined!

( Airline )

It has been fascinating to watch Delta’s response to the unwanted US Airways’ bid. While it’s still too early to say how this will unfold, I think Delta’s management deserves credit for taking this seriously and rallying the employees together for a unified voice.
Delta has even developed a web site: Keep Delta My Delta.
US […]
