Busy Fare Season Continues

Posted on Thursday 28 December 2006

The holidays appear to be the
most popular time for carriers to monkey with fares.

Last night Northwest filed 4,735 new sale fares expanding upon United’s
sale in Northwest’s target markets. The average fare reduction is $121
(one-way). Northwest already matched United’s fare sale yesterday so
these fares are in addition to the original United sale.

The sale fares require 14-day advance purchase with a last travel date
of March 7, 2007. In contrast to United, Northwest does not require
purchase by January 9.

Sample Northwest Sale Fares (one-way)

 Nashville - Cincinnati: $104
 Nashville - Memphis: $79
 Cleveland - Detroit: $79
 Cleveland - Pittsburgh: $79
 Charlotte - Cincinnati: $104
 Charlotte - St Louis: $134
 Cincinnati - Philadelphia: $134
 Dallas - Memphis: $104
 Detroit - Philadelphia: $104
 Houston - Memphis: $104

Last night United also decided to pull back a portion of last week’s
fare increase filing 3,326 new fares with a reduction of $5 (one-way).
For reference United filed 24,184 fare increases on December 21 so the
reductions last night represent 14% of the original increase.
