Delta: US Air to Raise Offer

Posted on Monday 29 January 2007

The Wall Street Journal reported this morning that US Airways is offering to sweeten its bid for Delta by $1 billion bringing the total offer to about $10.8 billion. The deadline of February 1st remains for reaction by Delta’s creditors.

Initially I gave my vote to US Airways in winning this hostile bid for Delta. I must say I have been surprised by how serious Delta management has taken this situation and how well they have maneuvered to capture the support of employees as well as local politicians.

While the poll I put up is still active, I think this may well be a done deal. To my mind the definitive moment was the senate hearings last week. We’ve had a total of 199 votes to date with 41% voting for Delta emerging on its own. 31% have voted for a Northwest-Delta merger and 22% voted for US Airways’ bid winning.

Thanks to all of you who voted.
