We’ve got a new tool in place for tracking major fare changes and the magnitude of each event.
Below is a chart showing the the number of new fares filed on a daily basis since the start of the year. You can see that starting with United’s $5 increase on January 11th through Delta’s $5 increase on February 1st there was a lot of activity. Since Delta’s increase was rolled back on February 5th there has been relative calm. The only other blip is Northwest’s fare sale on February 13th.
The Delta increase is interesting because it has two peaks. The first peak was when several carriers matched on Friday, February 2nd. The second peak is on Monday, February 5th when all of the carriers pulled back the fare increase.
For the past 14 days we have had relative calm in fare land.
Also note that the Southwest increase on February 9th did not results in a significant number of new fares in relation to the other network-wide events.
