Air Canada Rolls Back $4 Increase

This afternoon Air Canada rolled back its $4 one-way increase. United did the same for overlap markets. This is Air Canada’s fifth attempt to raise prices. Four of these increases were ultimately rolled back and one was marginally successful.

Wall Street Journal Starts Business Fare Index

The Wall Street Journal today began publishing a weekly report on business fares. The index tracks changes in 7-day fares for American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United. The current index level is $763.

Delta Wins in Refund Test

Rick Seaney completed a test of the airline’s low fare guarantees. He found that it is possible to get a refund if the fare you purchase goes down before midnight. The process isn’t always easy and Delta stood out for its customer service.

Index Down 13 points With Fare Sales

Both Southwest and AirTran released fare sales last night with many of the network carriers matching in overlap markets.

Carriers Match Southwest Fare Sale

Southwest filed a fare sale last night for 14-day fares. US Airways aggressively matched in overlap markets and other carriers also jumped in.
Savings range from $10 to $80 one-way. The fares are all for off-peak travel (Tuesday and Wednesday) for travel starting after May 7th and through Southwest’s current fare schedule.

Air Canada Increase Matched and Holding

Air Canada’s $4 (one-way) increase started on April 18th was matched by
all of the network carriers in overlap markets and, at least for now,
appears to be sticking.

Index up a further 8 points

The index continues to climb and now is at 455. It is tracking closely with the increases in 2005 and 2006. I attribute the climb today to that fact that now everyone has joined on in Air Canada’s $4 one-way increase.

Northwest Joins Air Canada Increase

In this morning’s update, Northwest increased fares by $4 (one-way) in Air Canada overlap markets.
All of the network carriers have now jumped in on Air Canada’s increase.

American and US Airways Join Air Canada Increase

This evening American and US Airways joined in on the $4 increase (one-way) in overlap markets.
