Index up 11 points

With all of the fare changes today, the carriers were able to get a bump up in the index which is now at 441.
The index was 11% higher on May 18, 2006 at 490 and at 476 in 2005.

Pricing “Stagflation”

While in the last 12 days there have been two attempts at system-wide fare increases, the index remains stubbornly low, and actually declined during Delta’s initial increase.
What’s been happening is that the carrier pricing is going in both directions at the same time. So while there are system-wide increases, there are also decreases being filed […]

Index Moves Down 9 points

The index currently stands at 430. On the same day in 2006 the index was at 474 and 484 in 2005.
The chart here shows clearly the gap between the trend lines for 2005 and 2006 versus what we are seeing so far in 2007.
Our analysis has shown a correlation between the index value and […]

Index Remains Relatively Flat

The national index is currently at 346, just 2 points above where it was before the Continental increase on Thursday.
The latest round of increases really didn’t have a major effect on the index value. Both the national and the business fare indexes show only a small uptick based on the fare initiative.
I attribute this to […]

Index Stable, Increase Coming?

The airfare index has been stable for several days running.
I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that Delta or United will try to raise fares in the 8 pm update tonight. Thursday’s is the favorite night for fare hikes, and it’s been a while since any of the network carriers have tried […]

Wall Street Journal Starts Business Fare Index

The Wall Street Journal today began publishing a weekly report on business fares. The index tracks changes in 7-day fares for American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United. The current index level is $763.
What’s especially interesting to note about the business fare index is that it tracks separately from the national fare index. For instance, when […]

Index Down 13 points With Fare Sales

Both Southwest and AirTran released fare sales last night with many of the network carriers matching in overlap markets.

Index up a further 8 points

The index continues to climb and now is at 455. It is tracking closely with the increases in 2005 and 2006. I attribute the climb today to that fact that now everyone has joined on in Air Canada’s $4 one-way increase.

Index up 7 points as AirTran Sale Expires

AirTran’s 48 hour fare sale ended last night and the index bumped up 7 points this morning.
We’re back now at one star which means that right now fares are slightly above the values in 2005 and 2006.
Air Canada’s increase may also have affected the index, but my guess is that the AirTran sale has greater […]

New Series – Weekly Roundup

I am going to try to do a weekly round up highlighting the changes in the airfare index and the major movers and shakers of the past week.
For the week ending March 23, the biggest fare event was Delta’s $5 increase last night. It’s been more than 45 days since Delta last tried to make […]
